ALBUMS [ON THE 6 - RELEASE AND PRODUCTION DETAILS]

Jennifer Lopez On the 6 front CD cover On the 6 is the debut album by American singer Jennifer Lopez, released on June 1, 1999 via Epic Records (see 1999 in music). It peaked at number eight on the U.S. Billboard 200, remaining in the top twenty for eleven weeks and on the chart for fifty-three (making one re-entry). It sold six million units worldwide and produced five singles, including the Billboard Hot 100 number-one "If You Had My Love" and the dance number-one "Waiting for Tonight". The title refers to the 6 subway line in New York City, which Lopez used to commute to work in Manhattan from her home in the Bronx during the early years of her career. The original title for On the 6 was Feelin' So Good. Lopez even wanted the song "Feelin' So Good" to be the first single instead of "If You Had My Love".

Lopez's debut album On the 6, a reference to the 6 subway line she used to take growing up in Castle Hill, was released on June 1, 1999, and reached the top ten of the Billboard 200. The album featured the multi-week Billboard Hot 100 number-one lead single, "If You Had My Love", as well as the top ten hit "Waiting for Tonight". It also contained the Spanish-language, Latin-flavored duet "No Me Ames" with Marc Anthony. Though "No Me Ames" never had a commercial release, it reached number one on the U.S. Hot Latin Tracks. Despite this, the music video for "No Me Ames" received moderate airplay on the music channels VH1 (United States) and The Box (United Kingdom). On the 6 also featured guest artists such as Big Pun and Fat Joe on the track "Feelin' So Good", which failed to make the top fifty of the Billboard Hot 100. "Let's Get Loud", the final single, earned Lopez a Grammy Award nomination in the "Best Dance Recording" category in 2001. "Waiting for Tonight" was nominated for the same category the previous year. "No Me Ames" received two nominations at the 2000 Latin Grammy Awards – "Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal" and "Best Music Video".

ALBUMS [REBIRTH - RELEASE AND PRODUCTION DETAILS]

Rebirth is the fourth studio album (fifth overall) by American singer Jennifer Lopez, released in 2005 (see 2005 in music) via Epic Records. The album's working title, Call Me Jennifer, was a response to the "J.Lo" moniker which Lopez claims gave her an unfair reputation as an over-the-top diva. The eventual title was chosen as an attempt to start a new beginning after the "Bennifer" fall-out and the immense critical and commercial failure of the 2003's film Gigli. The music itself is standard Lopez fare, '80s-tinged urban pop and funk (see 1980s in music) combined with orchestral ballads. Her new husband, Marc Anthony, co-wrote and co-produced one of the album's tracks, "(Can't Believe) This Is Me". Rebirth was her worst-received album to date, selling just approximately 700,000 copies in the U.S. Critical reception was mixed; comments in negative reviews were mainly focused on Lopez's weak vocal range and her reliance on overproduced material. Rolling Stone wrote "J-Lo's career hits its Gigli", referring to Lopez's notoriously poorly-received film. Still, the album did produce one modest hit, the jazzy "Get Right". Rebirth was also released in a DualDisc format. The DualDisc contains the album in enhanced stereo, the "Get Right" music video, the "Get Right" remix music video featuring rapper Fabolous, and a short documentary on the recording of the album. The documentary was originally shot by acclaimed director D. A. Pennebaker, who shot Bob Dylan's Dont Look Back. Lopez was reportedly stunned by her depiction, in which she was complaining angrily about the sound of her voice and verbally abusing her employees. A few weeks after "Get Right" was released to radio stations, the song and the album became the subjects of controversy when it was discovered that the beat and some of the lyrics had plagiarised Usher's unreleased song "Ride". A few months later it was found out that the album contained another "cast off", "Ryde or Die", which was meant to be on Brandy's 2004's album Afrodisiac. Brandy's voice can apparently be heard on the song as well, but she is not credited in the album for her vocals, which further fueled the controversy. Worldwide, the album hasn't done very well, selling just three million copies. Still, it was Lopez's most successful album in Japan, where it sold more than 200,000 copies.

After a year away from the music scene, Lopez released her fourth studio album, Rebirth, on March 1, 2005. Although debuting and peaking at number two on the Billboard 200, the album quickly fell off the charts. It spawned one hit in "Get Right", which reached the top fifteen in the U.S. and became her second Platinum hit (after "If You Had My Love"). "Get Right" was also successful in the UK, becoming her second number-one single there. The second single, "Hold You Down", which featured Fat Joe, reached number sixty-four on the U.S. Hot 100; it peaked at number six in the UK and ascended to the top twenty in Australia. Rebirth was certified Platinum in the U.S. by the RIAA. Lopez was featured on LL Cool J's single "Control Myself", which was released on February 1, 2006. It reached number four on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and number two on the UK Singles Chart. It was Lopez's first U.S. top ten hit in three years.

ALBUMS [J.LO - RELEASE AND PRODUCTION DETAILS]

Jennifer Lopez J. Lo CD front cover J. Lo is the second album by American singer Jennifer Lopez, released in 2001 (see 2001 in music). The second single, "Play", performed disappointingly, and led Lopez' team to bring in Ja Rule of The Inc. Records (then known as Murder Inc. These remixes, which are essentially different songs with the same title, both reached number one in the U.S. In July 2001, the album was re-released with the very popular "I'm Real" (Murder Remix) as a bonus track (due to its explicit nature, the re-release came with a Parental Advisory sticker). For the song "Dame", Lopez joined Puerto Rican singer Chayanne on the cha-cha-cha-beat track.

Lopez's second album, J. Lo, was released on January 23, 2001 and debuted at number one on the Billboard 200. The lead single, "Love Don't Cost a Thing", was her first number-one single in the United Kingdom and took her into the top five on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. She followed it up with "Play" which gave her another top twenty hit on the Billboard Hot 100 and reached number three in the UK. Her next two singles were "I'm Real" and "Ain't It Funny" which were quickly rising up the charts. To capitalize on this, Lopez asked The Inc. Records (then known as Murder Inc.) to remix both songs, which featured rap artists Ja Rule (on both) and Caddillac Tah (on the "Ain't It Funny" remix). Both remixes reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 for several weeks. She re-released J. Lo on her thirty-second birthday with the remix of "I'm Real" as a bonus track. Following the success of the album re-release, Lopez decided to devote an entire album to the remixing effort, releasing J to tha L-O!: The Remixes, on February 5, 2002. This album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, becoming the first remix album in history to debut at the top on the chart. Featured artists on J to tha L-O!: The Remixes included P. Diddy, Fat Joe, and Nas, and the album also included rare dance and hip-hop remixes of past singles.
